Anita Kontrec

Anita Kontrec was born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1954, lives since 1989 in Cologne, Germany. From 1972 to 1978 she studied English literature, ethnology, and sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and attended the sculpture class of Professor Sabolic at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.

She began her artistic career in 1986 with her first personal exhibition "Shapes of Memory" in Zagreb, Gallery DDT. Since then she has had ten solo exhibitions and participated in numerous prominent group exhibitions in Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, and The Netherlands. She conceived and organized several interdisciplinary and intermedial projects – among others RECALL BYBLOS in cooperation with artists, scientists, and publicists from Zagreb and Cologne, presented in the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany and the Museum and Gallery Center MGC in Zagreb.

With her most recent picture-objects Anita Kontrec has been researching the intersecting points between sculpture and painting, as well as the effects of color and light in new spatial and light constellations of contemporary architecture. She works "site specifically"- her ideas on culture and urbanity are based on interrelations of specific social and architectonic facts. Architecture, Writing, and Color are the major topics that she will continue to explore in her coming projects.
