An external view on Destination Management in Croatia

Lack of Destination Management
Presentation at the symposium: Croatian hotel industry and tourism, today and tomorrow

On the 8th of May Croatian-Austrian Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the group "Austrian Hotel Investors in Croatia" and Croatian Association of Hoteliers have organized the symposium on the following topic: "Croatian hotel management and tourism, today and tomorrow".

Following topics were discussed on the symposium:
  • Croatian tourism development from the perspective of Austrian investors
  • Ecology and the spatial planning on the Adriatic coast - concept of sustainable tourism development
  • HR management in the tourism industry
  • Destination Management
At the symposium Kristina Petrusic has introduced most important prerequisites of the Destination Management, she has also presented the Austrian experiences in the Destination Management. Finally, Mrs. Petrusic derived the suggestions and defined the key success factors for Destination Management in Croatia.

Six main external learnings could be of use in Croatia:
  1. Define a Destination Map and distinguish between city and leisure tourism
  2. Reduce number of tourism associations (and destinations) and professionalize the management (BMC or BMO)
  3. Think strategically and clearly segment the desired incoming mix and proactively develop it
  4. Develop the offering in the destination (service, infrastructure, star mix, architecture) according to the value (= service/price) proposition of the destination
  5. Actively use the internet for customers attraction and retention
  6. Reduce bureaucracy and current restrictions in Croatia
Concerted measures and long term thinking - Roland Berger recommendations:
  • Invest enough into the development of a good Destination Management concept
  • Look into the world and learn from the best benchmark destinations
  • Change the attitude towards more service orientation, less administration
  • Define guest target groups and develop your offering adequately, following a plan
  • Involve good partners, present yourself professionally
  • Set up a "Destination manager", who is measured by fulfillment of defined quantifiable targets
