Croatia as regional logistics hub

On May 10, 2007, Ingo Schroeter, consultant from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants held the key note presentation at the first international logistics forum in Croatia.

The forum was organized by Wifi Croatia and the Croatian Supply Chain association.

In his presentation, Ingo Schroeter analysed three main building blocks which define how successful a geographical location can be as a logistics hub. The three building blocks are: Economic development, Investment climate and Infrastructure.

The main findings are that Croatia shows favourable economic development, even though it could be faster, favourable investment climate, however infrastructur is in urgent need for development.

While road infrastructure is well developed within Croatia, the railroads network is in bad and outdated shape and the potentials of the Croatian ports are not nearly utilitzed to the extent they could be used. The port of Rijeka plays a crucial role however to position Croatia as a main logistics hub for the Southeastern European region: it is the closest southern European port to Central Eastern Europe, laying at the beginning of the pan-european corridor V. The main problem is that the port is not well connected to transport routes – mainly railroad.

Another problem in Croatia is the inefficient customs procedures at the borders, which led to the surpassing of Croatia on the pan-european corridor X, which is mainly flowing via Hungary and Romania now, instead of Croatia and Serbia.

Croatia needs to therefore fastly enhance intermodal connections via adequate investments into infrastructure, use more PPP models and actively pursue the establishment of regional logistic centers in Croatia via better serving logistics client needs.
